The World Coastal Coastal Championships and Beach Sprint Finals, scheduled to take place in less than two weeks in Genoa, will feature high-caliber athletes, many of whom recently competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, bringing significant Olympic experience to the Ligurian capital. An event, these Worlds, part of the Genoa European Capital of Sport 2024 program.
In the men’s single sculls (CM1x), standout names include Mohamed Mohamed Kota from Egypt, who placed 16th in the lightweight double sculls in Paris. From Italy, Davide Mumolo, reserve in Paris, a high-profile athlete, will bring his talent to his hometown of Genoa. Also competing on San Nazaro beach will be American Christopher Bak, a world champion in endurance and beach sprint, and England’s Charles Cousins, who achieved a notable 5th place at the London 2012 Olympics.
In the women’s single sculls (CW1x), New Zealand’s Emma Twigg, who shone with a silver medal at Paris 2024, will be competing. Also bringing significant experience is Austria’s Katharina Lobnig, who placed 3rd in Tokyo and 10th in Paris. Her experience and determination are well known, as is her collaboration with her sister Magdalena, her crew partner in Genoa. Azerbaijan’s Diana Dymchenko, who finished 17th in the single sculls in Paris and has already collected several world titles in coastal rowing, will also be competing. Ireland’s Monika Dukarska, who placed 11th in the pair in Tokyo, and the Netherlands’ Janneke van der Meulen, a multiple world champion, are ready to challenge for the top spots.
In the men’s double sculls (CM2x), the Netherlands presents a high-profile team with Finn Florijn and Lennart van Lierop, Olympic champions in the quadruple sculls in Paris. Jan van der Bij, also from the Netherlands, won a silver medal in the men’s eight in Paris. New Zealand is represented by Joseph Sullivan, who not only was an Olympic champion in London 2012 but also won the America’s Cup in 2017. Additionally, the Swedish duo of Dennis Gustavsson and Eskil Borgh, who have already won two world titles in endurance double sculls, pose a threat to all competitors.
In the women’s double sculls (CW2x), Karolien Florijn, gold medalist at Paris 2024 in the women’s single sculls for the Netherlands and unbeaten in this discipline for three years, is a key contender. Also competing is Italian Valentina Rodini, who made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by winning a gold medal in the lightweight women’s double sculls for Italy. Marieke Keijser, also from the Netherlands, who won bronze in the lightweight double sculls in Tokyo, will be present in Genoa as well.
In the men’s quadruple sculls (CM4x), Spain fields Rodrigo Conde Romero, who finished fifth in the double sculls in Paris, while Italy can rely on Giacomo Gentili, who won a spectacular silver medal in the quadruple sculls in Paris, and Pietro Ruta, who claimed a brilliant bronze in the lightweight double sculls in Tokyo. Two Italian athletes eager to confirm their prowess in the waters of Genoa.
In the women’s quadruple sculls (CW4x), New Zealand’s Francis Brooke and Lucy Spoors, Olympic champions in Paris 2024 in the double sculls and silver medalists in Tokyo, will compete in the Genoese waters. Attention should also be given to the Ukrainian crew composed of Yevheniia Dovhodko, Kateryna Dudchenko, Darya Verkhogliad, and Anastasia Kozhenkova, who finished fifth in the quadruple sculls in the Parisian waters.
