With the World Rowing Coastal Championships & Beach Sprint Finals, Genoa establishes itself as the capital of rowing in September. This event, part of the Genoa 2024 European Capital of Sport, will see athletes from around the world compete in the waters of Corso Italia at San Nazaro Beach. The event is dual: the first weekend dedicated to endurance with clubs ready to compete, and the second where nations will compete in the Beach Sprint Finals, an Olympic discipline for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
“Genova boasts a great tradition in the acquatic sports for the competitive results obtained by its athletes and teams, for the quality of the events planned and for the high number of sport practitioners”, says Alessandra Bianchi, Councilor for Facilities and Sports Activities of the Municipality of Genoa. “In this context, rowing is obviously also added and, in the year where it is the European Capital of Sport, our city is happy to welcome all of the participants to the World Rowing Coastal and Beach Sprint Championships. For the first time in its sports history, Genova will host a Senior World Championships. A very important competition, from the Ligurian Sea begins the dream of many girls and boys who will aim to participate in the Los Angeles 2008 Olympics, first five-circle act for this innovative and fascinating discipline. Athletes, staff, delegations, supporters and family members will be able to enjoy some special days.”
“Our promenade, Corso Italia, with the beach and its most characteristic village, Boccadasse”, adds the Sports Councilor, “will establish a fantastic frame for a spectacular event thanks to its ability to link itself with the surroundings. But that’s not all. Genova will surely be an important stage also for its suggestive sites to visit, starting from “caruggi” in the historic center to the “creuze” that reach the hills, landscapes varying from the sea to the mountains, exhibitions, museums, and the unmissable focaccia to dip in your hot cappuccino. Genova is waiting for you: and we are ready to help you discover it. Making the already unique atmosphere even more exciting is also the integration of an historical challenge. The 69th edition of the “Antique Maritime Republics Race”, with the White Galleon and the crew with the San Giorgio Cross ready to battle in its home waters to win a long-standing trio of consecutive victories. I cannot wait to welcome you in Genova to experience together this exceptional event”.
The venue for the races will be San Nazaro Beach, located on Corso Italia. The dates of the world championship are from September 6 to 15. The schedule includes coastal rowing endurance races on the first weekend and the Beach Sprint Finals on the second. This marks the second consecutive year for Italy after last year’s edition in Barletta, Apulia.
